چکیده

Current technology and policy have created an apparent spectrum scarcity, a situation in which it seems there is not enough available RF spectrum to deploy the next generation of wireless services. It has been shown that this appearance is incorrect because the majority of licensed spectrum is unutilized. In order to address this problem a new technology, the spectrum sensing cognitive radio, has been proposed. Such a radio would be able to locate and use licensed spectrum while avoiding interference with the licensed user, a technique dubbed dynamic spectrum access. This idea has sparked a range of new technologies and algorithms for supporting dynamic spectrum access. Many of the cognitive systems use highly complex algorithms for enabling dynamic spectrum access. With a variety of hardware systems available to run these algorithms, it is becoming necessary to have a common interface to the software defined radio. In order to meet the growing demands for interoperability, this thesis proposes a workflow for developing new software defined radio platforms. This process is verified through development of the University of Kansas Agile Radio platform. Using the knowledge garnered from the development of this system a generic software defined radio control interface is developed. Such a system will allow the development of a hardware agnostic cognitive network stack. iii Acknowledgements

Software-Defined Radio - Basics and Evolution to Cognitive Radio

We provide a brief overview over the development of software-defined or reconfigurable radio systems. The need for softwaredefined radios is underlined and the most important notions used for such reconfigurable transceivers are thoroughly defined. The role of standards in radio development is emphasized and the usage of transmission mode parameters in the construction of software-defined radio...

Universal Frequency Domain Baseband Receiver Structure for Future Military Software Defined Radios

Future military waveforms are most probably implemented on software defined radios capable to handle several waveforms. Implementation of several waveforms would require design of several receiver chains. In order to ease these design tasks, this paper describes a universal frequency domain baseband receiver structure. The structure may be used as a starting point to design receiver basebands f...

Maximum likelihood carrier phase synchronization in FPGA-based software defined radios

Digital signal processing techniques are applied to maximum likelihood carrier phase synchronization for QPSK and QAM in an all-digital sampled data receiver. To achieve the flexibility required by modern Software Defined Radios (SDR’s), this task must either be performed in a DSP processor (reconfigurable software) or in an FPGA (reconfigurable hardware). This paper describes the design proces...

A Designer’s Perspective On Future Memory Architectures For Software Defined Radios

Data-rich wireless communication terminals, such as smartphones, are integrating an increasing number of wireless access standards. To limit the manufacturing cost, both academia and industry are investigating the concept of software-defined radios (SDR). In this paper, we focus on the design challenges for building the memory architecture of such SDR platforms. Particularly, we advocate the us...

Memory Usage of a Software Communication Architecture Waveform

One question commonly asked about software defined radios is “How much memory do I need?”. While the answer depends greatly on the software framework and underlying operating system, this paper describes tools used to measure memory usage on a Linux based system running the OSSIE SCA framework. In addition to the conventional tools commonly used to study memory usage, this paper introduces the ...
